Best of 2015: Drugs/Reality

I am pretty much always confused about my body-- its contents, its boundaries.
Where should it go? Why is it clumsier in a winter coat and how do I compensate for that?

Language roots my reality, imposes order. Language allows me to organize and navigate more reliably, creating meaning, albeit slippery in the world around me.
This is why I largely avoid marijuana.
The significance of this decision was reinforced at the end of 2015, when I spent a terrifying night altered by a slim teaspoon of THC cheesecake.

The change happened gradually.
I was drawing with friends in a brightly lit kitchen, listening to music. There were snacks, probably good ones. Jokes were made.
But slowly everything took on a more sinister hue.
The record was scary and sounded very big. My friends looked outlandish.
I no longer had the ability to engage with them in the ways I relied on. My words were shutting down, overwhelmed by other senses--unreliable senses.
Terrifying senses.

With the remaining scraps of my verbal faculties, I asked to be led somewhere to lie down.
A friend took me to his bed then retreated from the room, where I was left to remember what Friend and Room meant.
I felt distress at a departing benevolent presence, but by that time I had largely dissolved into a series of unbounded chemical reactions. I recognized that my matter was bleeding into the molecules around me. My vision was darkening. Death would come soon.

I approached death without fear or sentiment, understanding at once that there was no god, just the gristle and chemistry inside me and a senseless, disordered series of words moving through it. Familiar terms cycled through my mind, rootless and unrelenting. Then everything feel silent.

The next morning I awoke. I asked myself if I still liked coffee, Now That I Was Different.
I decided I would try to.
I met with a Friend. We had a plan to draw, and it seemed important to keep this Plan, that we'd written together on our Calendars with Pens.
I don't indulge in psychedelic art. It is off brand, best left to the Alex Grays and Fred Tomasellis, but I allowed myself to make one drawing before putting this experience decisively behind me.
It is pictured below.
The drawing is stupid, pot is drugs, reality is fleeting and very frightening.
Trust nothing.
Happy New Year everyone.

HA HA HAppening

I recently printed my first drawing zine of this decade.
It is rooted in antiquity but oh-so NOW.
It features clowns and circles around the classical subjects of eros and tragicomedy.
Behold the groovy printing tricks we pulled at General Public Collective.

"HA HA HA" is available for $3. I accept paypal.

Vampire Hunter D(roops)

I don't know anything about manga and I'm not sure I like it.
However, I was asked to teach a class in it for teenagers recently, and reflexively said yes. I said yes because I thought it would be funny (me, teaching a class about manga!). And I knew it would provide an opportunity to do some research that I'd never be compelled to do otherwise.
I also don't really like tea.

This winter, I created a club- a nomadic club with an actively ambiguous meeting schedule- to "get into" both of these things. Eekee's Tea House has been a space for me to study anime and drink tea in the company of other humans who can provide enthusiasm and knowledge for these topics that I wouldn't be able to gather on my own.
This week at Eekee's Tea House, when the time came to watch our feature, the controller for the playstation was ominously absent.

The tea house guests and i rallied upon this opportunity to draw what we assumed happened in the movie-- Vampire Hunter D-- or at least what we hoped went down. I was lucky enough to have in attendance some of the ladies of The Droops, Indianapolis's preeminent low brow mural art squad.
The following drawings are our amateur attempts to reinterpret anime vampires through our own favorite filters (off-brand cartoons, wonky signage, raunchy teenage graffiti, tattoo flash splatter) interlaced with traces of our evening's conversation.
I have to assume our interpretations surpass whatever the original movie could possibly offer.

Dirty Drawings from Naked Lunch

Dirty drawings made at last night's live reading of Naked Lunch at Rachael's Cafe in Bloomington, a fundraiser for The Burroughs Century.

Felt embarassed about the folks at the table behind me getting a load of the smut I was sketching until I realized the content of the night implicated us all.
These doodles are the night's highlights; From here I digressed into drawing almond-eyed aliens with big dumb dongs and cut myself off.

Miniature Home Invasion

Blogtober barrels on into November; Today I showcase a collection of collections-- friends' miniature "kitsch houses"-- and a drawing inspired by a seventies shadow box.

Here we have the shadow box of video wizard and miniature enthusiast Stephanie Halstead:

Containerization's Charles Fox has a minimalist approach to kitsch:

Mine mostly houses my existential dilemmas. Also, kitchen witches, bean display, harvest colors, and Hollie Hobbit.

Casual Collaboration

Though I've been apprehensive about losing the momentum built across last month's period of intensive writing, I have been eager to shift gears. Specifically, I've been excited to extract myself from the solitary patterns and heavy navel gazing with which writing sometimes seems synonymous. I can't take the interiority...
If my residency had gone on another month I would have conducted more experiments in appropriation and sought out opportunities for collaboration and co-authorship. Singular voices seem flimsy, possibly irrevocably dated.
Sunday morning I was doodling on the back of my roommate's workshop notes (talented poet, Liza Milhander) when I realized those things were covered with suggestions for imagery!--The perfect antidote for my horror vacui and an ideal opportunity for casual collaboration.

Variety

Hi, how are you? Why are you on the internet when you could be running around with me? Or going to a house show? It's been a good run at my house since March, The Bitchyard. Here's what you've been missing: (All images by yours truly, Erin K. Drew. I know, "new media" or whatever, but don't steal please!)

Coming soon: An online companion to a personalized edition of the Bloomington DIY calendar, "Let's Go!" if I can stand sitting in front of a glowing screen that long... Godspeed!

COMPOSER

John Collins McCormick is a multi-talented knucklehead and friend who makes tightly controlled compostions with simple materials in various visual mediums.

His drawing zine is available from Friends and Relatives Records.

He's interviewing me about being a "Woman in Noise Music" for Matthew Himes forthcoming magazine "Chortler." I am just relieved to be included. Results will be posted in the near future.

Mug with the sound of its own making

Here's a sketchbook page documenting what went on behind the scenes of the Mean Mug's inception.
The all-white design dog mentioned is a Yoshitomo Nara affair seen at the Chicago Art Institute gift shoppe (sic).
I want one, but not as much as I want a pair of those Balloon Dog bookends that have Jeff Koons up in intellectual property arms.

Which is interesting, given his history with appropriation.

More than all of that, I want Y. Nara's haircut...
